romanian lessons

Why do we learn new languages? It is not simply because it is a way of communication. Languages help to unite people; through them, we can understand each other and that keeps us closer. Learning a second language is one of the most common and practical hobbies. Many people choose to study a new language because it can help with their career – this can mean a new job or advance in the current one. also, you can travel for work or even be relocated aboard.

Also, languages are an important part of a country’s culture. It says so much about civilization and its people. A word can carry with itself a story about wars, battles, or love. So it happens with the Romanian language and this is why we are talking about it in this article. It is a beautiful and unique language that attracts everyone’s attention. You will find out why this language is so special!

The Romanian language is one of the most underrated Latin languages, if not the most underrated Latin language. Everybody has heard about French, the language of love, or Spanish, the language spoken in most of our favorite songs.

But what about Romanian? For the people who have a little bit of knowledge about it, Romanian represents the language of the vampires. It is one of the most beautiful and sensual languages you can learn (with a little bit of hard work, as we talked about in one of our other articles about Romanian).

While the other descendants of Latin are grouped around the Mediterranean Sea, Romania is a country that it’s a little bit isolated and it’s easy to miss on the map. This is the reason why Romania has such a different language characteristic and a history worth knowing. But if you find a little bit of time in your tight schedule, you’ll realize that learning about Romania and its language it’s one of the best decisions you’ve made in your entire life. Why?

Simply because Romanian is one of the most beautiful languages of the world if you make time to understand it.

The Slavic influence has made this language the most unique one in the Latin language family, is similar to all of them, but mostly different from all of them. If somebody asks you what languages you speak and you say Romanian, most of the people would be pleasantly surprised because it’s not as common as the other Romance languages.

Many people run away from Romanian because, at a first look, it may seem a little bit difficult and hard to understand. But practice makes perfect and if you are determined to learn, in no time you’ll realize that you mastered one of the hardest and most unique languages that were born from the beautiful Latin.

What does Romanian sounds like?

You can make a simple idea of how the Romanian language sounds by reading the following ideas. First things first, you need to know that this language is very similar to Italian when it comes to pronunciation, melody, and some particular words. Some linguists say that Italian and Romanian languages share over 70% of their vocabulary. Of course, the Slavic influence is a powerful one and many words are reflecting this. That is why the Romanian language is such a unique one, and many people say that it’s like the Latin language, but spoken with a Slavic accent. Pretty interesting, isn’t it?

Unique Romanian words that give linguists a headache

There are so many unique words in Romanian that you’ll hardly find in other languages. Not only from Europe, but around the world!

For example, the noun “dor” it’s a mystical, magical, and lyrical word that exists only in the Romanian language. Some people translate it as “missing something or someone”, others describe it as “logging for something/someone”. But things are not so simple, because this word is impossible to translate.

There are so many unique words in Romanian that you’ll hardly find in other languages. Not only from Europe, but around the world! It is very difficult to explain these words to someone who is not speaking and understanding Romanian because they are unique. We choose some of the most popular and beautiful words that are impossible to translate from Romanian. Are you curious about it?

Missing someone – dor

For example, the noun “dor” it’s a mystical, magical, and lyrical word that exists only in the Romanian language. Some people translate it as “missing something or someone”, others describe it as “logging for something/someone”. But things are not so simple, because this word is impossible to translate.

The word comes from the Latin “dolus” which means “pain” (“durere” in Romanian). This word is used to illustrate multiple emotions at once: the fear of losing something or someone is combined with the gratitude that the thing or person existed in our lives at some point, even if it was for a short moment; the way we are terrified when we leave home for the first time with the enthusiasm that comes with the beginning of a new journey; the fear of losing someone we love, even ourselves, just for a single moment, right before we are relieved when we realize and accept the fact that nothing lasts forever.

So, we accept the fact that time passes by, even if dorul tears us apart sometimes. At the same time, the word is used to describe a method of going back in time. When we miss the old times of our lives, when we want to escape this reality a little bit, even just for a second, we feel this again.

A beautiful song – doina

Another Romanian word that is very difficult to translate into other languages is doină. What does this word mean? Well, it is a poem specific to Romanian folklore and usually, it is accompanied by a melody. This poem is a very emotional one, expressing a man’s feelings and events, mostly the most tragic ones (losing loved ones, unshared love, missing the family, pain, and dor, etc). It seems that Romanians are very sentimental people.

Romanian Christmas carol – colindă

Music is always with these people. If doina was a way to express some sad and deep feelings, some other songs express important events. For example, if other languages have the notion of Christmas carols as the traditional seasonal songs, Romanians have colinde. This is another word that cannot be translated, but a beautiful tradition comes with it. Colinda is a traditional Christmas song that is sung by children on Christmas Eve. They use to walk in groups from house to house, announcing the birth of Baby Jesus.

The symbol of spring – mărțișor

Of course, there is one more word that we previously talked about on this blog – mărțișor. It is an ornament that is tied with a braided thread, red and white. This thread is given as a gift on March 1st to girls and women as a sign of welcoming the spring season.

At first, these kinds of words may seem difficult to learn (to write, to pronounce). Here is a secret that might help you – Romanian is a phonetic language, which means that all the words are pronounced like they are spelled. And most of them are written in the same way. A few words are really hard to pronounce (maybe the ones with diacritics) because the majority of them are ending in vowels. Of course, Romanian has some groups of letters – diphthongs, triphthongs, and ci, ce, chi, ghe, ge, gi combinations that need special attention, but it’s nothing that you can’t learn with the right teacher or online language course!

Romanian is one of the most unknown languages in the world, but people have no idea what they are missing out on. Being born from the strongest empires of the world, the Romanian language was spoken by multiple kings and emperors, from the kindest to the strongest and bravest men and women that ever lived.

The strong people that fought for their country and their mother tongue are present in every single word that Romanian people are speaking, so be careful when you use them. You don’t want Vlad the Impaler’s spirit to be mad at you because you talked badly about his mother tongue. It’s such a beautiful feeling when you find out the brave history beside a foreign word, isn’t it?

A language that it’s pretty easy to learn when you start to love it and has numerous beautiful, magical words and phrases that will open up the gates to a mystical world for you. Is that even possible?

As long as the Romanian language exists, it is. Go ahead and have fun learning it. You can study on your own, starting with the interesting article that you will find on our blog. When it comes to pronunciation, it helps if you practice by yourself. Train your ear to the Romanian language – listen to the radio, and music and watch some movies.
