Just close your eyes! What do you see? Are you scared of the dark? Or are you comfortable with it? No, it’s not a spiritism lesson, it might be a Romanian one if you’d be enthusiastic to discover the country of the most challenging castle you’ve ever visited, Dracula’s Castle.

One of the main tourist attractions of Romania is Bran Castle. Tourists from all over the world choose this location due to the mysterious story that spins around it. Everyone wants to know the story of Count Dracula and visit his residence.

So if you’re a fan of boring stories, you’d rather look for fairytales, Romania has also a lot of places to visit that are right out of fairy tales.

But who’s Dracula, the main character in the infamous novel by Bram Stoker?

Scarry stories spin around the iconic count, whose residence was in Transylvanian Mountains, but deep there, they’re inspired by the Romanian merciless history figure, Vlad Draculea, meaning „bad blood” from Gaelic.

Vlad Țepes was a well-known Wallachian voivode who instilled fear in many people. He was also the source of Bram Stoker’s inspiration for the book Dracula. Surely you’ve seen the screenplay with Anthony Hopkins, as well as the more recent ones.

The book follows the story of a vampire who is several centuries old and lives in the Carpathian Mountains. Sinister things happen around this fictional character.

Stoker picked up the story of the Impaler ruler, spun it, and created Count Dacula, a  nobleman, a sucking blood vampire, having his rest in a coffin, empowered with the ability to transform people into vampires once they’ve been bitten.

It is believed that he had a special relationship with Devil itself, as he had a power that was equivalent to 20 strong men, he didn’t cast a shadow, had no reflection in the mirror, and was always hiding from daylight as once the sun rose his obscure powers ceased.

There is history beyond this legendary Transylvanian scary figure.

The name Dracula comes from the nickname given to Vlad Tepes’s father, Vlad II, who was also known as „Vlad Dracul”, which translates to „Vlad The Devil”. Vlad the Impaler freely showed his cruelty to his enemies by torturing them through boiling, burning, and skinning people alive.

His usage of a corpse forest to stun and repel an Ottoman army invasion was one of the cruelest acts he had ever committed. Vlad Tepes, however, was a fantastic military commander and a hero to his people despite being painted as a vicious and ruthless ruler.

According to Saxon records, it seems that the Romanian Ruler committed up to 100.000 murders, hence the origin of his nickname, The Impaler. As It refers to the process of impalement, his favorite method of execution.
